Music 23241 Personal Reaction Paper due 10-19-10

Howell-Curricular Pillars
This article talks about the difference between using the pillars or units methods of teaching. The pillars method is about reinforcing a topic so that the student doesnt forget what he or she learned in the future. Kind of like building knowledge on top of knowledge. The units method is teaching it and moving on just like in a book how there are different units. I personally like the pillars method because it helps the student recall what they learned and they dont forget it which is what your trying to do in the first place.

Taggart-Meeting the Music needs of all Students
This article is about how music should not be considered extra-curricular because just like in math or science some students have more potential to do better in music. It is also a required class at the elementary level so is therefor not "extra". Just like in anyother class students should be given chances to rise to their best in the music classroom.

Devany-Learning Centers
I like the ideas of learning centers. It gives the student a chance to learn at their own pace. It also gives them the opportunity to focus on what they need to focus on. In a classroom one studnet might totally understand one topic while another student will have no idea what is going on. Learning centers can give these students the opportunity to catch up on what they need to.

Tagart-Developing Musicianship through musical play
I feel like for students at a certain age its is hard for them to focus in just a lecture or a typical way of teaching music by just sitting down and reading music. I feel like interpreting a musical game of puzzle of some sort would help keep a young students focus.

TRIAD-Early Childhood Education
It seems like everyone has there own way of teaching music to young students. Everyway can work I believe but it depends on the studnet because every child was introduced to music in a different way when they were little.

Manfredo-Effective Time Managment in Ensmeble Rehersals
What Manfredo is saying in this article is that in a rehersal you only have so much time such as only an hour. Other than just rehersing music you also have to set up, warm up, and tear down plus maybe sightreading. I got out of this article that the best way to plan for the short amount of time is to plan out exactly how much time your going to give to each thing in your rehersal.

Eisner-Misunderstood role of the Arts in Human Development
I was suprised when I saw that the arts were not a part of the school reform. I feel like the arts are just as important as any other subject and I like to think now how president Obama wants more arts in the schools. When I think of that it makes me feel better when I read this article.

Lehman-The Power of the National Standards in Music Education
I think having national standards for music eduation is helpful. I see how it can be stressful to teachers in the schools because they have so much to do but a lot of those standards come naturally in just teaching an ensemble. Such as just playing their instrument or singing, reading and notation, listening, and improv. Some of the standards just come naturally in playing in an ensemble.

Lehman-Ten Years Later
The National Standards have helped improve how teachers teach and how much students learn. I think its great that they are able to improve more and more every year.

Reiner-Reconceiving the Standards
I don not feel like the standards need to be revised or changed or anything. I feel that the standards are doing a good thing in helping students be the best musicians they can be and thats what every teacher wants for there students.

Bauer-Classroom Management for Ensembles
I like how he brought up how music ensembles are different from normal classrooms in how we are encouraged to make sound unlike being quiet and how we are in a class of all ages not just the grade were in. This article is mostly about how preparing for a music rehersal is totally different from just a classroom lecture. The teacher has to study their matterial so accuratly teach it just for example.

Kantorski-Becoming an Effective Classroom Manager
I like how in this blog they brought up how you should impress your students wit your musicianship. I feel like if you are not a good musician your students will not respect you because they will feel like they are not learning anything. I find it interesting how they say learn what to ignore because students are going to talk or act out but somethings you can just let go and not need to bring it up and you just need to learn when those moments are.

Marzano-Key to Classroom Management
What I got from this article is if you are organized your students will be more organized as well. The more you are organized the more you can help a student understand what they need to do. If you dont know what you are doing there is no way you can help the confused student.

Music 23241 Reaction Paper due 9/9/10

Campbell Chapter 5
I like how this chapter was saying how you can create a successful music program at any school you work at as long as you know what your doing. No matter what the status of the school district or how much money they have you can work hard to still have a succesful music program.

Campbell Chapter 6
I find it interesting how we hear music differently at different ages. I find it most interesting how we react to music differently at different ages.

Lehman-Music in Today's School's
I like the reason given why music should be taught in schools is that it is just worthwhile to know how music works. Everyone in there everyday lives listens to music and if you don't understand it there is no reason to be listening to it.

Shuler-Making Arts Education Curricular
The thing that stood out to me in this article was that most people consider music extracurricular. In every school music is a class with a grade making it curricular. Sometime your have rehersals after school but that does not make it extracurricular if you are reciving a grade for it.

Music 23241 Reaction paper Due 9/7/10

Campbell Chapter 3
The author brings up how not everyone learns the same. She also brings up that there are many different ways to learn. I completely agree with this because I believe that each student has their own way of learning. I find it helpful to students when teaching music for them to hear it to help them know either a pitch reference or maybe just how a rythem goes.

Erwin- Personal qualities of succesful music teachers.
In this article the author says all great teachers need to love young children to be great teachers. I dont agree with this at all. You can not love young children and be a great high school teacher and work with teenager instead of young children. I feel the only thing you need to be a great teacher is you must love your subject and love people in general. No just young people. If you dont love the subject your teaching you can not teach it effectively. If you dont love people you can not get through to the people you are trying to teach.

Leonard-Qualities that make some directors outstanding
I agree with Leonard when he says that the director must maintain regular contact with every student and and every parent. This way the students will know you care about them and feel more confident. The parents will also know you are interested in how the individual student is doing and you care if they are succeding. I also agree how preparation is a huge thing. If you go into a class not knowing what your doing no student will respect you. Making you lose your athority and losing control in the classroom.

Thompson-What we learn along the way
I enjoyed when Holder said how just acknologing the custodians in the school by just saying thanks or bringing oranges, can get many things done like the band room being cleaned or chairs being set up. I guess I never thought about how just a simple thank you can mean so much to someone who doesn't really get recognized much. Many of the writers in this article bring up how important relationships are. If your going to be in a career with the same people your whole life, I believe it is very improtant to make good relationships so you are not surrounded by people you dont like for 35 years plus.

Music 23241 Reaction Paper due 9/5/10

Campbell Chapter 1
I agree with the author when she mentions music as a "fall-back" career, and how teaching is not for everyone. She says how many people consider teaching music as the career to get into if they couldn't make it in another musical career such as composing or performing. Only some people are ment to be teachers and have the personal skills to be a teacher. Not just anyone who knows music very well can teach it. In Campbell's section "Tales of Five Musicians" I do not agree how she says that people who declare an interest in music education were incredibly sucessful and the best in their high schools. I believe many students can find a great career in music education and be very interested in it even if they're not "the best".

Campbell Chapter 2
I agree when the author says music educators personally "must have music" in their lives because If you don't have a passion for music and your trying to teach it, you can become a boring teacher who hates what they are doing with their lives.

Bianco-Ohio's First School Band Contest
I don't think it was fair that each band in the contest could only enter 2 or less soloist. I feel anyone who wanted to compete should have a chance. It makes me thankful for solo and ensemble contest we have now. I like how the march back then was used as a warm up and not judged. Before contest now, good opportunities to warm up are not given. I do like how the "Review of bands" seemed more light-spirited and more of just a friendly fun competition.

Eisner-Preparing for Today and Tomorrow
I disagree with this article. The best way to teach and prepare students for the future should be based on the past. If students dont know what happened in the past how can they learn from mistakes of others and make a better future.

Guegold-History of OMEA Marching Band Finals
This article was very interesting to me. I understand how marching band contest works, better than I have before. In high school our marching band was a show band and did not compete. So I never understood how marching contest worked.

Sanders-Important influences on the Intro of Music in Ohio's Schools
Its very interesting to see how big of an impact Ohio was in bring music out west in school. The thing I didn't like about this article was that it was mostly about the spread of music to the west when the article was about music in Ohio's schools. So before I read it I was expecting something a little different.

Sanders-Early Public School Music in the State of Ohio
I find it interesting that most schools started music education with singing. What I find more interesting is how it was taugh by just the regular subject teachers in the beginning. I feel like the schools could have found a musician to teach music not a german teacher or english teacher persay.
